As a service, the Balance and Stretch Center would like to offer the following introductory information from our Balance and Stretch Success Guide.

Plenty of sleep is needed to support good choices during the day and overall good health.  When you don’t get enough sleep you can become tired and irritable, your immune system becomes weak, and your judgment becomes impaired.  Scientists have shown that a lack of sufficient sleep can lead to insulin resistance, high blood pressure and a decreased ability for your body to process carbohydrates that you eat.

How Much Sleep Do You Need?

I Usually Get _____ Hours of Sleep Every Night.

The amount of sleep you need may vary.  It helps to get at least 8 hours per night, but you know your body best.  You cannot completely balance your diabetes if you don’t get enough sleep.  Remember Ben Franklin’s words, “Early to bed, early to rise, makes a person healthy, wealthy and wise.”  To help get your 8 hours every night, try any of these helpful tricks:

  • Establish a regular night-time routine
  • Don’t do a lot of exercise before bed
  • Read before going to sleep
  • Eliminate noise and light where possible
  • Don’t eat large meals late
  • Listen to soft music or “nature sounds”
