As a service, the Balance and Stretch Center would like to offer the following introductory information from our Balance and Stretch Success Guide.

When your body is under stress, both physically and mentally, it usually has affect on your blood sugar.  Have you ever felt overwhelmed, challenged, competitive, ill, hurt, about to have surgery or have blood drawn?  Maybe you had a big test coming up, a first date, or a big game that you were nervous about.  If so, then you have felt stress.

3 Things That “Stress Me Out” Are:

Everyone experiences stress during his or her life and it affects everyone a little differently.  Any type of stress on your body causes hormones to be released, which usually raises your blood sugar and blood pressure.  This is why when you are sick (which is a stress on the body), or worried about that big test, your blood sugar goes up.  Different stress management techniques can help keep blood sugars from rising.  Here are some ways to manage stress:

  • Talking with friends and family
  • Listening to music
  • Deep breathing
  • Getting exercise
  • Getting into nature
  • Meditating or praying
