.....As Clara Barton Camp's Leadership Training Director, I have seen how
enthusiastic campers are about Balance and Stretch and using their
At-A-Glance®
Day Planner. We at Clara Barton Camp are thrilled to be a part of Balance
and
Stretch, and are excited to see the program continue to positively
influence
the lives of our campers.
The Balance and Stretch Program has become an integral part of life at Clara Barton Camp. Our counselors and Health Care Team members now collaborate to
educate
campers on the five points of Balance and Stretch for Health, and the five points of Balance and Stretch for Life. Balance and Stretch recognizes that diabetes management is contingent not only on insulin and nutrition, but also exercise, stress levels, and sleep. Campers and staff with diabetes at Barton record their blood sugar levels, insulin dosage, exercise regiment, hours of sleep, food intake and stress level information with the AT-A-GLANCE® Day Planner, which is small enough to transport anywhere easily throughout the day. We feel these tools give people a sense of empowerment over their diabetes. It also teaches a powerful lesson about how these factors interconnect to affect diabetes health. We help the girls set their own goals for their health but also for their life.
We help our girls develop confidence in school, at home with family and friends, in their community helping others, developing faith in themselves to grow personally as they set and achieve their own goals. Our program helps girls learn to connect balance for health and balance for life. Allowing campers to make this connection has had, and will continue to have, long lasting positive effects on their diabetes management and quality of life.
